Cool upgrades

2022 Honda CRF250RHeat can be the enemy of power and durability, so we’ve made a bunch of upgrades to the CRF250R’s DOHC engine to keep things cooler and improve performance. The oil path to the camshaft has been changed to increase flow and reduce heat, plus more-rigid camshaft holders and cylinder head improve camshaft accuracy while also reducing friction and, again, heat. New dual intake-valve springs and a re-aligned rocker-arm shaft improve valve-timing accuracy particularly at higher revs, as well as further assisting in heat reduction. It all adds up to a cooler, more durable, better performing engine.

More torque

More torque at low revs means better drive out of corners, so our engineers changed the shape of the piston and connecting rod and optimized valve timing to help improve combustion consistency and thereby exhaust efficiency at lower revs. The bridged-box design of the piston uses a reinforcing structure between the skirt and the wrist-pin bosses that helps enable a high redline. Big torque down low, huge power up top. A winning formula.

Improved clutch

Big changes to the CRF250R’s clutch for 2022 help to significantly improve durability. Adding a ninth clutch plate (up from eight) plus an additional spring in the damper chamber, a more-rigid clutch centre, and better lubrication, combine with other upgrades to enhance clutch strength and performance.

Upgraded transmission

Stronger and lighter — that’s the CRF250R’s upgraded transmission. A new shift pattern and improved countershaft rigidity reduce the level of friction when shifting between second and third gears. Plus, the weight of the shift drum has been reduced by sharing its lead groove and making the through-hole larger. To deliver optimal power for each gear choice, the transmission and the ECU speak to each other through Gear-Position Engine Mapping.

Bigger airbox

By increasing airbox capacity by 78%, changing the shape and position of the air filter, and increasing fuel-injector lean angle to 60 degrees from 30 degrees, engineers managed to both boost torque at low speeds and improve engine cooling through better airflow. Plus, the fuel-injection system sprays twice per intake cycle, which helps increase fuel atomization without adding the weight or complexity of a second injector. Better fuel atomization means more power in the midrange and on over-rev — you’ll feel it the first time you ride.

New single muffler

The narrower the bike, the easier it is to manoeuvre. So we altered the exhaust system with a new single muffler to reduce the width of the bike by 70 mm across the rear side panels.

Downdraft intake and exhaust

The combination of 79 mm bore and short 50.9 mm stroke produces a high-revving engine with plenty of room for large titanium valves. The engine breathes and revs — the keys to making power. As well, the DOHC cylinder-head design let our engineers straighten out the intake and exhaust tracts to improve power and response. The intake is shorter and just about arrow straight, and the exhaust flows more efficiently too. You’ll experience more power and better throttle response.

HRC Launch Control

HRC Launch Control: push the button to select the mode, hold the throttle open, release the clutch, and the bike will do the rest, launching you into the first turn with a big advantage.

Engine Mode Select (EMS)

This simple handlebar-mounted button lets you dial in engine power delivery character with a push of your thumb. Choose between Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive, depending on track conditions.

chassis & suspension

New, lighter frame2022 Honda CRF250R

To match the improved engine performance, Honda engineers upgraded the frame to CRF450R-spec, resulting in improved stability while also saving 700 grams of weight. As well, a new rear subframe saves an additional 320 grams.

Showa spring fork

Mounted in a new triple clamp engineered to optimize rigidity, the 49 mm Showa fork has a slimmer shape but maintains its conventional spring design that helps increase front-suspension precision, handling, and feel. The 39 mm piston diameter and 25 mm rod diameter help to ensure a plush feel and supple action.

Short swingarm

The short swingarm helps make it light, and also gives the bike better rear-wheel traction — important considering how much power is on tap. The swingarm’s design focuses on improved stability and handling, while still reducing the bike’s unsprung mass.

Upgraded rear suspension

Engine improvements are wasted if that extra power can’t reach the ground, which is why Honda engineers paid special attention to the CRF250R’s rear suspension. A modified Pro-Link ratio, lighter spring, 5 mm longer stroke, and recalibrated damping characteristics all help to improve traction and handling. Additionally, the changes result in a 110 gram weight reduction.

Pirelli Scorpion MX32 Tires2022 Honda CRF250R

New this year, the 2022 CRF250R comes equipped with Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tires front and rear. The tread patterns and compounds are designed to offer good grip and feedback in a wide range of conditions and track surfaces.

260 mm front brake2022 Honda CRF250R

The large front-brake disc measures a whopping 260 mm, giving you superior stopping power while also being easy to modulate.

Black rims

They may not help you go faster, but the black D.I.D® rims sure look good.

additional features

Electric start

Convenient and lightweight, the electric starter is a huge advantage if you need to restart the engine in the heat of battle. Like the rest of the bike, the lithium-ion battery is both super light and high performing, weighing less than half that of a conventional lead-acid battery.

Bigger radiator

Another way the CRF250R keeps its cool: a bigger radiator, with more fins that are angled for better airflow.

Titanium fuel tank

Every gram counts on a bike in the 250 class, which is why the CRF250R has a titanium fuel tank. Light and strong, it’s also thinner than our previous plastic tank, freeing up more space and helping to centralize fuel mass.

Flat seat/tank junction

The CRF250R’s flat seat/tank junction makes it easier to move forward and backward on the bike, increasing your control.
